My Car Computer! AKA: CarPuter

I finally got my webserver up and running so I can post pix.
This page is from about half a year ago. I have updated the system since then. I will post new pix of the new setup as soon as i can.

Also, I made that page for a computer hardware website. So theres probably lots a technical talk.

Pictures are worth a thousand words...Enjoy!

The entire page at this link:
http://www.jefftsai.com/Pictures/Car...mp/carcomp.htm

Heres a small pic for you 56k'ers

Nice!

My carputer is one of my current projects... Trying to find a good touchscreen LCD that I can mold into the dash and also switch from the VGA input to S-VIDEO/COMPOSITE for my DVD player.

Awesome work!

(ps: do you hang on the mp3car forums?)

if you're smrt enough you can just go around the inverter that's in the power supply

Actually....yes i do run an inverter for it. Its a 1000Watt continuous power inverter. And i have an Optima Yellow Top to keep the power flow going. The old DuraLast...my ass couldnt put out enough amperage to keep the voltage stable. And it was a brand new duralast too!

The computer uses a good chunk of power so it wasnt viable for me to create a 12v ,5v, and 3.3V adapters.
Using the inverter was much easier.

As for dumbasses kicking the lcd. Notice i said these pics were from my older setup. My new setup has precautions built in to prevent damage and make the computer easier to access. For the lcd i cut out a piece of plexiglass (clear plastic sheet) to prevent lcd damage.

As for the hide away lcd.....no unfortunately im not at that stage yet. It sits there permanently i can move it around but the kick panels and bottom of the glove compartment keeps the lcd in place even during hard driving.

As for the "ohh i see lcd, bust window and take" factor...
My windows are tinted pretty dark and the lcd is black and since its sitting under the glove compartment the shadow adds to the hiding factor. Even on a bright sunny day here in texas if i put my face up to the window and shield out the sun i can barely see the lcd.

I will post newer pics of my current setup once i get time to.

By the way. If anyone is interested or planning to do something like this. You can contact me and ill give you a few pointers.

Well boot up time. Its very fast actually since its a car comp and i dont have many apps loaded on there. I sit in car press the comp power button. Start up car. And by the time i back out of the garage and going down the alley its already in windows with winamp starting up automatically.

Im guessing around 15-20sec from power button to winamp.

Btw for non comp people: winamp is a program that plays music and some other stuff.

i have no idea how he's gonna do this, i don't know shit about programming

Yeah, but automotive electricity is pretty dirty for computer requirements. A decent power supply can filter minor spikes and troughs in city current, but cars are just a little unpredictable from what I've heard.

As for the unix thing, it's pretty doable. Once you get rid of extra services like power management and whatnot, it's pretty zippy. The old riocar mp3 players use a version of slackware linux, I think it is. Those things boot up in about 3 seconds. So the difficulty lies in finding the right sound hardware that unix will know about, and knowing what you can take out of the operating system and still have it useable

i would advice against this, my friend set up a machine like that, stripped down running a *nix system, no monitor just a small hand held lcd screen attached to the number pad (no full keyboard just the number pad) he was running it on the power inverter to keep the power clean, only lasted like a month before it burned out the alternator, ofcoace his two 12 inch subs with two amps(not sure what the rms or peak was didnt ever get a good look) could have helped this, but still i wouldnt suggest it, it might work if you were able to get a high output alternator from a police car, or see if u can find one for your car, and get a good battery

JeffTsai how long have you had this system running? got a v6 or 4cyl? got a system or ne thign else hooked up?
