Maintenance

I was just wondering if you guys could educate me a bit in how often I should change tranny fluid, clean the throttle body, and other things that I have forgotten.

I know the basics such as changing the oil every 3K miles.
But things like the Transmission fluid, and the timing belt confuse me.

Any tips? I don't plan to do this myself, I just was wondering what kind of time frames you guys go by.

My car is a 1990 DX. 3SFE engine with Automatic transmission.

i dont know bout most stuff so i'm just as interested as you and dont quote me on this stuff but i believe the timing belt should be replaced every 75K miles... better off safe then sorry.

Tire rotation every 10K i think
brake pads are dependent on the type of driving but about 15-25K
check ur washer fluid every 2 months just to make sure u got enough
spark plugs every 50K prolly
...
um thats all i can think of right now

I did read about the timing belt and trany fluid changes in the Haynes book. It says replace every 60K or 24 months for the timing belt, and the tranny fluid is to be changed every 30K or 24 months. I suppose I'll change the timing belt, and change the tranny fluid when I get the monies together? I'd rather do 24 months because I only average 18K a year.

ok, i'm just gonna copy the haynes manual, cuz i love you all

250 miles or weekly

- engine oil check
- coolant level check
- windshield washer level check
- brake and clutch fluid level check
- check tires and pressure

3000 miles or 3 months

- power steering level check (i'd do this every week, you're there anyways)
- check tranny oil level (again i do this every week)
- change engine oil and filter

6000 miles or 6 months

- inspect/replace wiper blades
- check clutch play
- check/service battery (not much to do there, maybe clean the terminals)
- check/adjust serpentine belt
- inspect hoses
- check cooling system (?? thermostat opening/closing? coolant colour?)
- rotate tires

15000 miles or 12 months

- check/adjust brakes
- replace air filter
- inspect fuel system
- check differential fluid level
- inspect suspension and steering systems
- check driveaxle boots

30000 miles or 24 months

- replace fuel filter
- change coolant (every 60 months for the red stuff)
- inspect the evaporative emissions control system
- inspect the exhaust system
- change tranny fluid
- change differential fluid
- check and tighten critical chassis and body fasteners
- inspect and replace if necesary the spark plug wires distributor cap and rotor

60000 miles or 48 months

- check valve clearance (that's a bit too hardcore for me)
- change timing belt (DO NOT stretch this past, change it earlier if you think you're gonna get caught doing it late)
- replace fuel tank cap gasket
- replace pcv valve
- replace spark plugs

now this if for normal operation, if you drive in "severe conditions" then you should know what to replace and how often

thank you for your time, that is all

i wouldn't mess with the timing belt, if you have any major engine work done thoug, i would go ahead and have them change it out. but as far as i understand we have zero clearance or something to the extent so if our timing belt breaks the engine won''t be f*cked. as for the tansmission flush, the books usually just tell you to drain and refill, it's really not that hard, i've done it myself before. of course I did it on an automatic, i'm not sure about a manual tranny. The throttlebody isn't too bad either. If you look through the old post, using the search you will find info on it, including the first time i messed with it on my camry, and the mistakes i made and some tips also. good luck.
