Cold start - no fast idle

Hi,

We have a 1995 Camry LE 2.2L FI automatic. The vehicle starts well, and has always idled at about 500 rpm, even when cold. We've only had the car since July, but I would have thought starting it cold (and in much cooler, frosty weather) there would initially be a fast idle until partially warmed up.

Can anyone suggest what needs to be serviced.

Thanks!

Thanks 88 LE ...

Is this an item that I can simply replace, or do you recommend a dealer service it? Also, can you explain where the IAC is located.

Thanks.

You can try cleaning it and see if that helps.

Instructions from yotarepair.com:

Now if you want to try to clean it yourself you can do this. You will need to purchase some carb cleaner from a parts store or some place like WalMart or Kmart. Then you have to have someone help you start the engine and kind of keep it running if needed. The process requires that you take the large black tube off the throttle body and unplug the Idle Air Control Motor. Caution, if you have no idea of what I just described do not proceed without having someone there to assist you. You then take the carb spray and spray a little into the small square hole you will find in the throttle body opening. Have your helper start the engine while you hold the connector for the IAC to the valve so that it makes contact. When the engine is running spray into the square hole and at the same time make and break the contact with the IAC connector so that the cleaner gets into the working parts of the IAC. You know when its clean when you hear a louder rushing noise from the throttle body when the connector is making the IAC work or open. Then all you have to do is clean the area and inside of the throttle body with a tooth brush (old one is preferred) and connect everything. Your check engine light will be on so when you shut the engine off open the fuse panel under the hood and remove the EFI fuse for about 30 sec. and it should clear. If it does not then turn the key to the on position and try it that way.

The IAC is located at the bottom of the throttle body.

its the idle air valve... pretty easy to change. just take remove the 2 bolts that hold the throttle cable and remove the 4 screws to the throttle body. i had to use a impact drive to get the 4 stupid screws off the iav. i guess that hardest thing about this is the $$$ you have to fork out for the iav.

IAC = idle air control valve

ISC = idle speed control valve

IAV = idle air valve

Chiltons manual says:

Some vehicles use an idle speed control (ISC) valve while others use an air valve (AV) or idle air control (IAC) valve to control throttle body by-pass air flow.

So in other words they all do the same shit (control throttle body by-pass air flow).

88 LE and Fe519,

Thanks for the great information.

The Toyota dealer never mentioned the option of cleaning the ISC valve. Told my wife if she didn't replace it the car would eventually stall while driving. Only advise was to replace the
valve for $380 parts and labor.

A few Toyota service technicians said this valve has a bad design
for certain years. That a build-up of carbon deposits causes the
problem. What do you make of all this??

Harv Man,

How did you make out with cleaning your IAC valve? This part is
not cheap, about $230 for the original Toyota part.

The valve gets clogged with oil (thanks to the pcv).

I've never had a problem with mine, but I have removed the throttle body to clean it.

I find that if you remove the throttle body you can do a much better job of cleaning it vs with it still attached to the intake manifold.
