2004 Toyota Camry, 5spd. manual transmission, speedometer and odometer stopped working yesterday. The mileage on the car is 61000 kms. Later in the day check engine light came on.
I am just wondering if there is someone else out there that may have had this problem with their Camry and how much it could to get it repaired. I stopped by at the dealer yesterday, they say that it could be pretty costly repair.
I would appreciate some feedback on this.
Thanks guys, I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong section. This is my first time on this website.
I got the check engine light in the dashboard, I don't know what that means. I don't know why it came and what it means. It just came on after the I noticed the speedometer stopped working.
You need to get the Check Engine Light (CEL) read. That MAY tell you the problem. If you have a personal mechanic you use, stop by and ask. It only takes a minute to do. Also, I think candian Tire will read it for free. Someone else will know that for sure, and will probably respond soon.

Yes I do have a person mechanic. I am just wondering if you know where that port is located to read the code where I can get him to hook up the scanner. If you know can you please post? Thanks.
I am taking my car to him this evening to see if he can read the code for me and figure out what needs to be replaced. I am guessing it might be speed sensor, but why the check engine light came on, thats a mystery.
It should be under the drivers side of the dash pointing right down. Your mechanic will know what it looks like, so as long as you tell him that, you should be ready to go. It's a trapozoid shape. Let us know how it goes. Hope it;s an easy and cheap fix for you!

Thanks so much for your instant replies. Yes I will definitely let you know how it goes. I do have an appointment booked at the deater for thursday, but I want my mechanic to take a shot at this so I can save a few bucks. Dealers can be pretty costly. I hope its not going to be an expensive repair.
The dealer will typically charge 1 hour labor JUST to read the CEL (Where I am, it;s about $100). It is aften better to try your local mechanic 1st, if you know he is a good one. Good luck.
