Blowing small amounts of oil...

HEy there everyone, just hoping you could all help me out a bit.

I've noticed that when I accelerate the car under heavy load (I.E. - Punching the accelerator to pass a car on the highway), that when the car shifts into say 2nd gear to third gear under heavy accel, that it'll blow some oil.

Any ideas?
Could I have possibly tapped a valve, or perhaps theres a leak or something?

EDIT: As you can tell by my name, it's a 1990 3SFE Automatic.

As far as I know, yes.
Oil staining has been building up around my tip at my exhaust. It's not a real noticeable amount. I've never seen it myself, but apparently everyone who follows me has seen it happen.

How much does a head gasket cost to replace???

head gasket is something like 40$ cdn...

and 3-4ish hours of labour, but you can do it yourself if you want, old cars are awesome to learn on,

my first major engine work was head gasket on my 86 volvo 740, did it in my driveway when i was 16

my prob might be similar to urs, man

I'm not trying to steal ur thread or anything but my rolla's got a similar prob...

On hard acceleration, the car downshifts normally but when it returns to 3rd (2nd apparently is the power gear) there's this smell of oil in the cabin for like a second after.
It's the same smell u get when u drive if u happened to have spilled a little when topping up.
Could this be the head gasket also?

could be, or it could be leaking from valve cover and dropping down on the exhaust, or all the way down to the oil pan and then on the exhaust or something like that

i had the same problem w/ my moms '88 Benz 300E. 'cept it blew oil when idle for more than 5 mins. Definately some seals need to be replaced IMO.

It doesn't blow oil while Idling. It just blows oil when it shifts hard.

I'll wait for it to get a bit worse, and find out from a local shop and see what they say, then fix it myself :-D

Do you get a puff of white / blue smoke out the tailpipe when you start it up, but only when the engine is cold?

Could be the valve seals.

No, as I said it's only when accelerating hard.

It's like a dark kind of brownish dust. Very fine, and not real dense.

I only think it's oil cuz of the caking that is going onto my car's exhaust.

Usually oil smoke is blue, fuel is black, and coolant is white. I don't know about brown though?!

Well theres alot of black caking on the muffler that has been blown back by my tip. So perhaps this isn't an oil problem, but a fuel problem???

The only thing that concerns me is that my oil consumption ius sometimes high, but I never EVER see white smoke.

I've only seen the elusive smoke once, and that was when I was speeding away from a friend at night and looked in my mirror just as the car shifted and saw a bunch of brownish looking dust. This was at night though, so perhaps it may have been black but looked brown cuz of the lights?

I know I also one time got some smoke to come out (the same brownish dust) to come out when I was sitting at a light and revved the engine up real high. I didn't have my tach installed then but I can guess it was at about 5-6K rpm.

It scared me so I immediately pulled the car into a parking lot and inspected the back end.

Check to make sure all your vaccum lines are intact. If one comes loose, it will definately run rich.
