You can never get 9-12 HP from ANY muffler, period.

Don't expect a 9-12HP gain, but you might end up with one. You won't get that out of just a muffler, possibly with a full catback system. Talk to SpectraBlueCamry or Speedemn for info on 4cyl full catback performance. If you have a V6, someone in TTCC has a catback also. There should be more than enough info available for you. Also, that deep low tone, don't expect that either. It has a lot more to do with the resonators than the actual muffler. With stock resonator, yeah, nice sounding likely. With a straight pipe to that muffler, LOUD AS SHIAT!!

You can pretty much get whichever muffler you want, just make sure its good quality so it lasts.
The pipe, go to any muffler shop and have them replace the stock pipe from either the catylitic converter or the resonator (FYI keeping the resonator will keep it mellow if you choose a straight thru muffler) with 2.25" piping and ask them to straighten out any major bends as much as possible (i.e. at the rear axle)
*Ask if they do "mandrel bending"*
If they don't, just stay away from any kind of krimping or accordian bending. You want a smooth bend.

On my 95DX I have...
2.25" mandrel bent pipe with all major bends lessened from the cat but retanning the stock resonator, a stainless 3ARacing straight thru muffler with 2.25" inlet and 2.25" dual outlet and dual welded 2.5" 3ARacing rolled tips.

It sounds awsome! Just enough rumble for people to be like "wtf?" not "LOL OMG WTF!?!" Its when the CAI howels that people are like "fuckin' a!"
