Unhappy Help removing crankshaft big pulley!

Hi. I am working on a 92 Toyota Camary 4cyl. Any clues on how to remove the big pulley off the crankshaft so I can take of the lower timing belt cover? I can't get it to come out. I see a groove with some sort of pin in it. Do I need to remove the pin inside the grove? I have all the belts, upper timing belt cover, and the crankshaft bolt off as well.

Any help or clues will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Shawn.

wedge a screwdriver or a ratchet in the pulley to stop the engine from turning

undo the bolt with a bigass breaker bar, then use a pulley puller to take it out, or a prybar, work your way around

Do I need to worry about the groove with the pin? I tried using a pulley puller but it is just pulling the outer rim off the whole assembly. Is it normally this hard to take off the damn pulley? The crankshaft bolt was too bad to take off. Any other trick?

No.

The pin is used to align the pulley when its installed.

Your grabbing onto the wrong part of the pulley.

You wants the jaws to grip behind the pulley.

I use a impact wrench to take off the bolt.

I meant I was able to take off the bolt pretty easily. However, do I need to buy the specialized pulley puller from Toyota? Bought two from PepBoys and they were not able to grab behind the pulley that great (grabbed a few mm and broke after I applied pressure). There is no easy way to get it off, right?

Thanks,
Shawn.

Have you tried the other style of a pulley puller? The one without jaws.

Its a little bar that goes across the front of the pulley. In the middle of the bar is a threaded rod with a point on one end and a hex head on the other. Theres grooves on the bar to the left and right of the threaded rod for bolts. The bolts screw into the little holes on the crank pulley.

My friend rented one from Autozone when we did some work on his 5S-FE, but the bolts that came with it were all to big. So I ended up prying the crank pulley off with a prybar.

Try a prybar. Wedge it between the pulley and block. If you try anywhere else you'll break the lower timing belt cover.

i won't use an impact for anything engine related, just seems wrong to hammer that stuff

and i'm stronger than impacts, the torque spec is 160ish, most don't go up that high

160 ft. lbs. for a impact wrench is nothing unless your talking about some wussy ass piece of shit impact wrench.

My 1/2" drive Ingersol Rand does 425 ft. lbs. max.

I have yet to find a bolt or nut that challanges my impact wrench. Not even the big ol 52mm nut on my friends RX-7 that holds the flywheel to the eccentric shaft. That bitch is torqued on their (300+ ft. lbs.).

Can't find any puller that have small enough screw to fit the pulley. I will see what Toyota has tomorrow.
