A Camry with no Tranny oil change

My friend's 92 Camry V6 has not had a tranny oil change since 60k he says. The car currently has 103,000 miles on it. Routine oil changes have been done.

He checked the tranny fluid and it is a dark red/brown. No burning smell. The Toyota dealer just recommended to change it at the 120,000 mile service since that is a lot of work. Am I missing something here? DO dealer check the tranny oil at oil changes and recommend a change/flush as needed? No performance or erratic shifting problems.

Changing the tranny oil is by no means a big job. A dealer should do it in 30 min max. I did mine after 100 K Km and it cost me $40 CND at a toyota dealer.

Filter kit = $20 at Can tire
Trans Fluid = $10

so you can do it for $30 at home if you have a good jack and a creeper.. Can tire charges $100 + for a fluid and filer change

Drain and fill the differential too.

The diff is kind of a pain in the ass to fill. I've found that a funnel with a long piece of clear hose attached to it works good.

I'd do a full flush to save future hassle.

88, do you know if the Gen4 i4 auto have separate oil for the torque converter? Meaning that even when I do a tranny flush the converter still has old oil in it?

I know the differential is separate and I've replaced oil in mine twice so far. But my Haynes manual does not seem to mention anything about replacing oil in the torque converter...

Thanks

No seperate fluid. The fluid for the torque converter comes from the tranny, in other words its shared.

The torque converter drives the pump on the tranny.

If you do a flush all the oil fluid is flushed out.

With a drain and fill you still have fluid left in the torque converter.

Thanks - I did a flush myself recently with about 10 quarts - the fluid still looks clean

I don't have a pic of my differential, but I do have a pic that I scanned out of a Chilton's manual.

Disregard the part about 5S-FE and 3VZ-FE.

If its a automatic it uses Dexron II/III ATF.

Manual uses gear oil.

Yup it happened to me.

I grenaded the #4 piston on my turbocharged 3S-FE. It melted and a chunk fell out of it.

If you look carefully at my avatar you can see a chunk missing.

Sometimes doing a full flush if you haven't changed your fluid in a long will do more damage than just a regular fill. I've heard in a few instances where a fluid change on a tranny that hasn't had a fluid change in like 80, 000 km actually killed the tranny.

It might be better to just to a fluid change than a full flush.

The tranny is filled through the dipstick.

Differential is filled through the bolt / filler hole on the backside of the diff.

Quote:

Tranny: Check the dipstick

Diff: The fluid will start dripping out of the filler hole when its full.
