Cheap fix for oil leak?

I have been told instead of paying big money to have a main seal repaired because of the labor of "pulling the engine" and so on, that you can simply use a product like J.B. Weld to seal where the leak is, about six dollars and you can do it yourself. Smart & cheap?, or not?
And for that matter any leaks at all, be it transmission, rear axle etc.

You can't JB weld when a seal is leaking.
A seal is mainly used when there are moving parts are involved. The main seal rides on the crankshaft. So it's constantly moving.
JB welding would seal it...until you start it. Then it'll start leaking again.
Plus you still have to pull the trans/motor out to gain access to seal it.

If you are going to try anything, try one of those oil stopleak additives that you pour in to the oil. They claim to swell the seals a bit. It probably won't work to stop it, but maybe it will slow it down a bit. That's where I would invest my $5 or $6 before pulling the engine and trans to do the repair properly.

Good luck.

no there is no quick fix for a rear main seal leak...if you try one you are wasting your time and money. engine or trans has to come out, unfortunately.
