Angry rebuild caliper after 58,000 miles

Hi, I just took my 2004 Toyota Camry XLE to the dealership yesterday for a 60,000 mile maintenance check, and afterwards I was told that the rear brakes are not working properly because the caliper needs to be rebuilt, and it would cost $400. Should it be that expensive?

That's rather unusual after only four years and 60K. I'd have it looked at by someone else. Have you noticed any braking issues?

I haven't noticed any, but my dad drove it yesterday, and thought that when he applies pressure to the break, it goes down too low and is soft.

Yes. The labor rate in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area is rather high.

They probably really don't need to be rebuilt. The slides are probably frozen from corrosion due to your climate and massive amounts of salt used on the roads.

If that's all it is, I can save you a lot of money if you drive it to Baxter, MN.
