Adjusting the hand brake

Hello- I have a '99 and also an '04 Camry. I'd like to adjust the hand brake in each, as they seem rather "loose" (seven or so clicks to take hold). Could someone tell me how to adjust the hand brakes, please? Thanks - Richard W. in Moraga, California

Yea, this is something I would like to know too. A friend of mines has an '97 V6 LE that the handbrakes seem to be adjuested. I mean it has to go ALL the way up physically for it to 'hold' the car decent.

If your Camry has rear drums, the handbrake can be adjusted with a phillip screw driver by taking off the rear drum and adjusting the small gear. But be very careful you don't tighten too much or you will not be able to move the drum causing it rub and overheat and warp.

If you have discs in the rear than I believe you have to take the mid section console off and adjust the handbrake near the handbrake lever.

Someone correct me if I am wrong!

Yep. You should jack up the rear wheels to see if they turn freely with the handbrake off.
