I never leave mine out on the dash, or anywhere in plain sight. I also try to wipe the sunction mount marks off my window too. If I do leave it in the car (e.g. just a quick trip out of the car) I'll lock it in my glovebox.
I'd like to think my alarm would be a theft deterrant as well. It's hooked up to my horn and the gen 5 horn is ear piercing. The few times my alarm has gone off, it sounds like it's right outside when it's actually parked up the street! My only regret is not going for the 2-way alarm, but I'm still happy
