v6 3VZ-FE valve clearance check (timing)...

If the crank is at TDC for number 1....how much do I have to rotate (clockwise) to get 2nd cylinder to TDC?

and, where will the cam marks be aligned to?

(I tried the cloth hanger method...but wanted to know the right way...)

With a 4 stroke engine it takes 720 degrees of crank rotation to fire a cylinder.

Since you have a V6 a cylinder fires every 120 degrees. 720 / 6 = 120.

Firing order on a 3VZ-FE is 1,2,3,4,5,6 so if #1 is at TDC #2 would fire 120 degrees after #1.

The cams rotate at half the speed of the crank. When the crank does a full revolution (360 degrees) the cam is at 180 degrees. So if #1 is at TDC (cam also at TDC) the cam will be at 60 degrees when #2 is at TDC.

By the way don't you have a repair manual?

88 LE, you are the man. Not only you told me the answer, but also explain it very well. Big thanks!

And, no repair manual here....I figure I can do most of the stuffs without an manual....(I will probably going to get a cheap haynes/chilton in the future even though I know the OEM is the best....btw, I just got the car like 10 days ago.)
