Jumping tach needle WTF!!!!

I performed a plug-and-play gen2 gauge cluster swap a week and a half ago so I could enjoy the benefits of a tach, but lately I'm noticing something awry with it.... It's hard to describe exactly when it happens, but the needle will jump up 500-1000 rpm under certain conditions.

It happened with the intermittent wipers kicked on ,and when the turn signal was engaged, and sometimes it will randomly jump during normal driving. All the gauges are working fine, and otherwise the tach is both a godsend and well behaved but why is it happening?

Any ideas? I plan to check that all the wire looms are properly inserted into the back of the cluster but other than maybe a wire short or something this one is kicking my ass.

Thanks in advance
Steve

Yeah, probably a loose connector or wacky contact somewhere, before I got my new cluster with the tach, and I had an aftermarket on on my dash, I didnt do all that great a job of wiring it up and sometimes it would come loose and jump all over the place.

Re run the wiring to the tach with sheilded wire, and only ground one end of the shield.

Well, the needle behaved today but it's the only time in the last week it did so... wickedgen3 your problem sounds like either a connection in the back of the cluster (which I suspect may be my problem) or the speedo cable itself (too much slack? idk...)

I'll report when I rip it all apart, possibly this weekend but if not over Thanksgiving weekend.
