Question hydrogen sulfide ordor (rotten egg smell)

My 2002 Camry produces a hydrogen sulfide odor. It's very bad. The Toyota mechanic at the dealership where I bought the car says it's the sulfur content of the gas and to switch to a different brand. I have but the odor continues. Just yesterday I was talking with a Toyota mechanic and he said the catalytic converter was too efficient and that might be the problem. But if the CEL is not coming on and no codes were being returned, then Toyota would do nothing about it. I thought about replacing the cat with a universal cat. Maybe it would not be as efficient as an orignal Toyota cat.

Any ideas or suggestions.

Thank you.

i'm siding with the catalytic being messed up, my friend's '93 mazda MX6 had the exact same problem... I would think a BAD catalytic would be the problem, I think the mechanic was BS'ing you... a too-efficient cataytic converter? Never heard of such a thing, I'd say go to another dealer, or mechanic,. and get a second opinion

Good luck

Steve

The Mechanic is right, all the gas companies have been switching over the gas to a cleaner version and it has caused the odor in your car.

I have recieved official letters via snail mail from majority of all the auto manufactuers regarding this problem.

Check the web I'm sue they have something on their corparate sites regarding this problem, especially if you live in the northeast or southeast and the west coast.

It is no big deal though trust me I have had customers come back to me asking why their car smelled that way. I even have had my own personal cars get that funny smell.

The gas is not bad it just had some different additives that are beeing added for fuel economy and emissions.

You should've searched the forums first.
It's because of the high sulfur content in the gas, which becomes even higher come winter season. Deal with it and put recirc on. Non-sulfur gas will come to us in the near future (couple of years).

Just to let you know also, not sure about Cali but all of the other states where it can get butt-ass cold your gas is gonna be even more oxygenated than before up to around Feb 14 or 21.

Its a new but small little EPA Mandate. If you look at the pumps when you fill up there should be a label/sticker stating the dates.
