certified used car - service contract

hi
i recently bought my first car. it is a factory certified used toyota 2000 camry LE which has a 60,000miles on it for approx $10K+fees+tax. all toyota certified cars have a 6yrs/100,000miles limited power terrain warranty, which leaves a 2.5yrs coverage for my car.

my dealer is trying to sell a service contract for $2K which is more like a bumper-bumper. is this worth the money? at this point i would like to tell another fact that my car was registered as a rental car for the first one year. i tried to get quotes from other extended service contract providers on web like mbadirect.com and it was only $1400.00.

any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
vellay.

I personally wouldn't get the extended service contract on any Toyota, it's just a waste of money imo.

If you do decide to get one though, get the one from Toyota. It's much less hassle if you ever have to use it.
Also, you can haggle the prices of these contracts, they are not set in stone as a lot of people believe.

Thanks Jon.

I too thought toyotas normally are known for reliability, so there might be no need for extended serivces. But I was more concerned because my car was initially registered as a rental car for the first one year and has a lot of miles on it (60Kmiles).

I already enquired for getting the direct toyota extra care (specially meant for certified vehicles), but my car is not eligible as it has crossed the 36,000miles limit. I also tried shopping over phone with Fireman's Warranty and they quoted an actual bumper-bumper for $880.00 w/ $50.00 deductible. What do you think about this?

I appreciate your help in this regard.

Thank you
Vellay.

Well, more than likely the rental car agency got rid of the car around 30,000. They for sure won't keep it longer than the warranty.
I say if the second owner and you take good care of it, it should last. I have 65,000 miles on my car with no problems except regular maintance(including brakes and fluid flushes).

I've never gotten a warranty from a 3rd party so I can't comment there. Some people have no problems getting their company to pay for things and others just about have to harvest an organ to get them to pay a dime.
If you can talk to people to have the warranty you want to get and get their opinions, that is the best thing you could do.

I personally wouldn't have gotten a previous rental, but what's done is done.

I would opt out of the service contract as long as the general mechanical components are in good working order, i.e. tranny, motor, suspension.

Congrats on your first purchase.
