Can you just slip the timing belt on the v6 3VZ-FE?

I aligned all the marks correctly...but if I simply slip in the belt and tighten the tensioner...do a 720 degree crank rotation...then my crank mark points to 5 degree retarded...ie, missing one tooth at the crank.

I removed the belt and re-did the same process...same result, 5 degree retarded.

Why? How would you do it?

(I ended up "solving" my problem by purposely mis-align the crank pulley by one tooth...then, everything checked out okay....but this is just doesn't seem right in my book.....)

Crank and both cam gears at TDC then install belt.

The belt is installed like this: crank --> front cam gear --> rear cam gear. Make sure theres no slack in the belt as its installed around the cam gears otherwise it'll slip and the timing will be off.

After the belt and tensioner is installed rotate crank from TDC to TDC and check alignment. Crank should be at 0 degrees (TDC) and both cams should also be at TDC.

Ive been putting off doing this. The 3vz is non-interference right? How long does it take to DIY, and how hard? It looks like a pretty freaking tight fit.
