My 93 camry had the airbag exploded when i bougth it, and i just got one new air bag....well not new but not exploded either, so i want to install it, but i wonder if i can jut unplug the old air bag and plug the new one, or may have to reset some codes or something, any one have do this before? is there any chace of exploding the new air bag?
Okay, if you're going to be replacing airbags, you're going to have to disconnect the battery, wait at least 5 minutes, and then pull the fuse for the airbag module(s). After you do this, then you're ready to remove the old and install the new. After you're sure that everything is connected properly, you then should place the fuse back into the box, re-connect the battery, turn the ignition over to on, and steer clear of the air bag for about 10 minutes max. Be sure when removing the airbag module that you remember where all of the connections go, and what there for, one little wire could mess the whole thing up, and that air bag could explode in your face, and no one wants that happening, especially since you've probably spent a pretty good deal of money on the new air bag. Let me know if you need any further information.
have you do this procedure your self?
any idea where that airbag module(s) are?
seams to be kinda complicated the AB just cost me $51, but anyway i don't like to see them fly away just like that, need to be prety sure of what i'm going to do, or i may just install the new air bag with out connect it, i now it should be connected, but also the esploded AB don't look very nice to me....i may can have the looks till i find out how to connect it.
I've done the airbag replacement on my 99 Camry before, and I know where they are both located, there is one in the center of the steering wheel, which can be removed by popping off two little plastic covers on each side of the wheel and removing two Torx screws, then pull the module out of the steering wheel, and disconnect the connector. I know that in the Gen 4's that if you leave the airbag module disconnected, the horn won't function because they're built in together, but that may not apply to yours. As for the airbag module on the passenger side, it's in the dash, so you have to remove the lower cowl panels, the kicker panel, and the glove compartment in order to access it, as soon as you take the glove compartment down and remove it from the car, you can look straight up in the dash (you have to lay with your head on the floorboard) and you can see the bottom of the passenger airbag module, there are four mounting bolts on the passenger one, although there may be more or less mounting bolts on yours, I don't know for sure. And all you have to do is remove those mounting bolts, disconnect the connector from underneath, and then push the airbag module up out of the cut-out area in the dash. Installation is reverse of the removal processes, although installation is much easier, but you have to take much more caution about re-installing them. I'm not really sure where the airbag modules are located in your car, I've never really been around an older Camry, the oldest I've been in and actually looked at was a 96, and it was very similar to my 99. But hopefully this information will help you. If you need to know anything else, or if you have any more questions, just post back.
wvagravehunter gave a good description of the steering wheel airbag. I've removed the steering wheel one from a 1992 Camry. No passenger one on my model so I cant help there. The installation/removal for the driver side is pretty easy, just make sure you have the T30 Torx screwdriver/socket.
my 93 haven't pass AB either, actually i allready remove and reinstall the old AB, piece of cake, my concern is to activate the new AB at installing time, i've heard that you need to reset some codes, like telling the comp to shut down the power to the AB so it don't explode when you install it, but i'm kinda lost with this, by removing the AB module is like a reset ?
With the whole thing of resetting the airbag module, you really shouldn't have anything to worry about because if you've removed and reinstalled the old one, you would have had to program something, or reset something, so I'm assuming that when you remove the module itself, it's reset. Just make sure that the battery is completely disconnected, and you've let the car sit for at least 5 minutes before conducting any work around the new airbag module. I really can't emphasize on how much you need to let the car's back up power supply to drain out and the SRS system to clear itself before conducting any work, I've known plenty of guys who rushed into it and have had airbags explode in their faces. So you really need to be cautious around those airbags...but about the passenger side airbag, like I said, I wasn't sure whether or not your car had one, or where they were located, but I know mine has one on both sides, but it's a '99 -- so there's a good six years difference.
