Changing the fuel filter, 2000

Instructions tell you to loosen the lower flare nut... but that bastard is on there so tight that nothing is working. I don't want to mess up the nut.

Any ideas? ...is it supposed to be THAT tight?

Well, problem solved. We used some sort of... lubricating spray.

Ignore me!

I have a 1990 Celica - 4A-FE engine.

I. too had trouble with the filter. My thoughts would be to cut the metal pipe at the bottom, about three inches from the filter (so you can get at it - it's under the charcoal canister). Then you have something you can put on the bench, soak in liquid wrench, and loosen the fittings on both ends. Then reconnect with a two inch piece of rubber tubing and clamps.

The metal pipe is too easy to bend and kink.

Cutting the tubing is a very last resort dont you think - i have done this filter change myself and it is not easy. I used flare nut wrenches and remove some stuff that was in the way, the easy to unbolt parts only, and you can reach it from above and below just barely enough to get it off without mangling things. And dont forget you need good lighting to see what you are doing too, dont try to do it in a half-lit garage at night or you are not going to be having a fun experience at all.
