2009 Toyota Camry-2.4L-158HP-4CYL DOCH

Just bought this yesterday. Beautiful car. Barcelona Red Metal Flake. Actually wife's new ride. New to Toyota. I own a 93 Infiniti G20 & a 96 Nissan Pathfinder. Had a few questions I would appreciate answers to.

1- At what mileage should I have the factory fill engine oil changed?

2- I have always done overkill on oil and filter change. Will probably do this car the same way. Is it worth using the TRD Japan Style High Volume Oil Filter or OEM or K&N, Mobil 1 EP, Pure One or Amsoil EaO?

3- It calls for 5W20. Any real favorites in regards to oil brands? I will use synthetic. Local dealer uses Castrol. Not sure if in bulk or quarts. They have both dino and synthetic at the dealer.

4- Gas. States that regular will do. I've always used premium in all my vehicles. Dealer I purchased it from said regular is all they put in any car. Thoughts on which octane level of fuel will be appreciated.

Regards,
bill

Your first 3 questions are really personal preference choices. I too do 3 month/3000 miles oil changes on all my cars, including my 07 Camry XLE with the same 2.4 liter engine. I use 0W-20 dino oil in that one. The owner's manual for the 07 states 5000 miles, so if I go to 3500 I don't gt too concerned. I suggest you read your owner's manual for the answers to these questions.

As far as grade of gasoline, I can say you will receive no benefits from using premium. You will not experience more power or better fuel economy. You will only be enhancing the profit margins of the major oil companies. Most of the major oil companies use virtually the same additive package in all their grades of gasoline. Premium fuel contains an additional additive that raises the flash point of the fuel. That's the temperature at which the fuel will ignite. This allows higher compression engines to compress the fuel mixture to higher compression ratios, and then allow the spark of the spark plugs to ignite it, rather than the heat of compression. If the heat of compression ignites the mixture you would experience pinging. Click and Clack, the guys who do the Car Talk show on public radio on Saturday mornings, also recommend using only 87 octane fuel. They even say if your car calls for premium fuel, try the 87 octane fuel in that car too. Your car is designed to run on 87 octane fuel. Use that.

Enjoy the new Camry.

Mike

I work at a Toyota dealership, according to Toyota you can leave the factory oil in until you reach 5000 miles. Every 5000 miles the Toyota scheduled maintenance is an oil change and a tire rotate.

1) 5,000 miles. You can change it earlier if you like. It doesn't really matter.

2) I use factory filters or Mobil 1 filters. I also use Mobil 1 EP oil at the manufacturer's recommended 5,000 mile service intervals.

3) Mobil 1 EP as stated above.

4) Using premium is a waste of money and there isn't any gains to be made under most driving conditions. Higher octane is more resistant to ignition and actually burns slower. This can actually leave more deposits in the engine and decrease effeciency.

Enjoy your new car Bill and welcome to TN.

FYI. Every question you had could have easily been found using the search feature.
