Thumbs down Dead Camry :-(

My transmission is showing signs of failure ( jerkey gear shifts when i accelerate and decelerate accompanied by a metallic clunk sound) i'm probably going to have to get a new tranny for my 1995 4cyl auto. I was wondering if i could get a 5spd manual tranny (i know they exist) instead of another auto, or, if its easy enough, an engine swap. please respond with any comments or links as to where i could find a manual tranny or which engine works best for a swap ( i was thinking mr2 but their engine is in the back, this would call for some fabrications right?) my budget is a little over 5k
thx

well, first off when it comes to your tranny, make sure that its actually dead first, unless you just want an excuse to dump some money on the car and make it a bit faster.....

try changing to synthetic fluid, and make sure you get a full flush....it may just be really realy dirty fluid....

but if your tranny is fucked, then a tranny swap shouldn't be too hard for you, mostly because you have a 4cyl which means that the tranny is easily available, and you could pick one up in some scrape yard and then bring it to a mechanic that is willing to do it for you.....

or even maybe do it yourself.....

for engine swaps.....use the search button, cuz then you'll get an idea of the full possbilities and.....well, the restrictions....which there are many...

My dad is taking it to the shop sometime soon to see if its the timing (problems started happeneing after they adjusted it), the differential (spider gear), or the tranny. I kinda hope its the tranny because then i have an excuse to dump some money into it to make it worthy of even trying to make it fast.

I know that aroudn my area, this car would be the ultimate sleeper (next to a corolla or neon) and an excellent project car (so much room under the hood) but to do that i have to put a lot into it. I was thinking 3sgte engine and trans swap, new fuel system, intake and exhaust (possibly dual) , headers, IC and maybe a bigger turbo for under 6k (because i can do all the work myself) But for 6k i could get a different car (any suggestions on that?)
so im left with a decision to make..

should i keep the camry and work on it?
or
buy a better car with more bhp.. I.E. mr2, 240zx, prelude, or integra

thx
Bunky

I would just keep the car so that at least you know about the car and what you will have invested in it. I heard of many people who replaced the automatic tranny into a manual one and it didn't seem too difficult, but there are though many parts you'll need to change which you can all buy as used.

IM me on AIM at zonicamry. or Email me at hornman829@aol.com

we need to chat. Ill help you find all the info you need on engine swaps and on just a tranny swap if you decide to go that route.

in the mean time, do a search, and type in "engine options swap"

you will find a few great threads on swaps.
