#*&%!^ Exhaust!

So I'm putting the snow tires on my Camry today (pimp, eh?)

and got around to the right rear tire. Now while it was off, I had to look at my exhaust right around the area of the muffler pipe flange and centerpipe flange. It has been getting loud, and I half-assedly looked last weekend to see that the muffler pipe, where welded to its flange, was badly rusted... Well I looked again, because it's much easier to see without that pesky tire in the way, and whaddaya know... a crack about 2/3" long and 1/8" wide! No wonder it was getting loud! I have a replacement muffler waiting to go (a V6 muffler- because it has two tips, so it's a looks-motivated decision), looks like a pretty easy job but I wonder how badly those flange bolts have rusted! Ahhhhhh... I can think of better things to do on a bitterly cold December day (planning to do it on Friday)

This sucks!

Steve

2nd gen camry's are known for blowing holes in there exhaust. I infact jsut replaced the mid pipe on my 89 this weekend because the weld to the resonator broke. My parents are the original owners of the 89 camry and in the time of owning it the head pipe has been replaced once, mid pipe now 3 times and it is on its third muffler. A tip for you though. Get some WD40 or some rust penatrant and soak the crap out of the bolts. Let the stuff sit on the bolts for about 5-10 minutes. That should help you out in taking the bolts out. Also make sure you have new bolts for it. I beleive the thread size is 8X1.25" and it is a 12mm bolt head.

a simpler way is to get a torch, and heat up the nut and nock it off with a small hammer...
the metal of the tubing is far better material than the bolts and nuts themselves... so they should be fine....

takes about five minutes...
