you don't have to get a new coil and you can use the stock distributor a lot of times. It depends on what you are trying to do. I don't have one, but have assisted in installed 3 of them, and in all cases the box was the only thing added. Forgot the model number but they go for about $200-220 at most auto parts stores. You can find them online for 10-20 less and pay 10-20 for shipping, so everything balences out most of the time.

I have AD... ...HEY A CARE BEAR!
I've helped install a 6AL before, I was thinking of just getting the 6A, i don't really need the rev-limit and I can always add it later. I'll keep the stock distributor and coil for now - I would like to upgrade to an MSD higher output coil one of these days.
Thanks,
Steve

1. msd SCI
2. had to custom the distributor to use an external coil
3. msd blaster SS coil
4. also needed is a tach adapter for a toyota otherwise ur car will stall forgot the part number i think its 895 hei(?)
I find the MSD the most worthwhile upgrade is the soft touch ignition rev limiter... If you decide to go with the MSD 6-series, always go for the 6AL. You cannot upgrade it later unless you purchase an entirely new 6-AL box.
The better spark in most cases will not offer any significant power increase unless you are boosted, or fitted with higher compression pistons. I would get the MSD jsut because it has nice rev limiter and it saves your engine from damage if you happen to constantly bang on the rev limiter during a misshift, etc...
