Are the headlights the *only* thing that will work... or does other electrical stuff work as well???
Also, what type of engine is it, and does the starter engage (IE does the engine crank, but doesn't turnover)
If the starter isn't turning, then perhaps the battery doesn't have enough Amps left to make it turn (even while under a charge from another vehicle), or the starter fuse/relay is bad. Or possibly even more so, the starter may be bad...
Check *all* the fuses in the Engine compartment fuse box next to the battery, as well as the 3 main fuses on the positive post of the battery. Then check the fuses inside the car next to the driver's side kick panel.
That's just some basic ideas to start with. Until you can give us a bit more info, I can't help, but maybe some else can.
G/L!!!

Shot transmission, but it's all good.
It's a 4 cylinder. Nothing is working...not the starter, dome lights, door locks, etc. I was really puzzled when it wouldn't take a jump start. Would the starter have anything to do with that? I'd think a bad starter would still allow other electrical components to work. I'm going to check my battery connections again and the relays/fuses. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
I isntalled some heat seat, but left it on all night, roughly 4 hours. then car won't start. car > 96 avalon. headlights works, electrical wokr, but car won't start. turn key to 'start' hear 'tic-tic-tic-tic-tic.....' I think i'll take the advice and check the amps!

*nods head in agreement*
The large draw fuses at the battery could be blown.. Why they'd be blown, is beyond me...

Yeah, definitly dead battery. Got it to work though. My brother have a jumper pack and I tried but it didn't work, so then my friend did and VIOLA! It Starts!! So I need to wire the power from the heater seats to a hot key, but as know the northeast is hit with about 24+ of snow, so I guess it will have to wait....Thanks you for your help!
Turns out it was a blown 80amp Alt fuse near the battery. I think my son's buddy, while attempting to jump what was probably just a dead battery, crossed up the positive/negative booster cables and fried the fuse (as well as a couple of other fuses, it turned out). Anyway, all's well now and we got off on the cheap, too!
