ect changes the shifter pattern, makes you (the tranny that is) shift at higher speeds... (and redline)

for daily driving its recommended to leave it off, I actually never use it as my car redlines anyways when I floor it

ECT does jack in terms of straightline acceleration. It's when you're already moving and you want to have a faster throttle response. For example, if you're goign 50mph and you hit the gas, you might just stay in whatever gear you're in (usually 4th) and move along slowly. With ECT on, you're much more likely to just end up dropping a gear and start accelerating in 3rd, making your acceleration faster and much more responsive. For some reason, at least for me, when the car upshifts with ECT on, i can feel it's really rough and not nearly as smooth when I just have ECT off.

always on, i used to just use it to pass, but i got fed up driving 800kms on hwy 17 (one lane each way) too many ppl to pass

remember, our cars have ecu's that "learn" so the harder you drive, the more performance you get

Well it makes a difference in my car but I have a 2nd gen so I don't know if that matters. It shifts later which means my car stays in it's power band and accelerates noticeably faster.

Yes, the ecu learns your driving habits...after it's reset. I believe the Gen 4's don't have the ECT, neither do the Gen 5's.

I turn off the ECT for the first 10 minutes of driving so my car doesn't rev too high...but after that and on the highway, it's ALWAYS on...you never know when you'll need the extra power.

o btw i think my car's ecu is going retarded. about the first 5 mins of driving i can floor it and the car will redline in 1st. after that 1st stops at 4000 rpm but occasionally will redline. is something wrong with my car?

well its not a good idea to redline the engine in the first 5 minutes of driving, the car wont be properly warmed up.

as for resetting the ecu, disconnect the negative wire on the battery with a spanner for some people say 10min, some people say overnight

until the engine is warmed up enough it won't let you rev it right up

my old volvo didn't have that, man that engine would scream like a banshee when it was -25 out at 6000 rpm

To reset it, pull out the EFI fuse, leave it out for like a minute...or disconnect your battery for like 10 minutes? Your car will drive rough for a week or so.
