IAC Dealer replace

Hi there'

Wife's 99 Camry V6 starts then stalls when starting cold. Sometimes if I juice the throttle it will come up to speed. OK after warmed up. I have narrowed the problem to a sticking IAC, apparently a most common problem. The Autotap analyzer shows no codes, everything OK. Car has 65,000 on it.

She doesn't trust me to fix this myself. That's all right by me but how to I approach the service department? I don't need a diagnosis or lots of other work on the car. This dealer has a reputation of padding the bill; usually ends up over 800 dollars for an oil change by the time they are done. Other dealers in area have screwed up previous cars. It's her car and she wants the dealer to fix it.

Thanks,

John in Kalifornia

It's a pretty easy job if you're slightly inclined at all. Sometimes all that needs to happen is a cleaning. Gunk builds up in the motor and prevents it from moving properly. Take it off, spray it out with carb cleaner, and that's usually it.

If you really need to take it to the dealer, then just tell them what you want done. You want the IAC replaced, period. Labor should be somewhere around an hour.

That's what I intend to do. I would do it myself but have to go to the dealer to get the part anyway. Quote is about 425, parts alone 255 or so. Cheaper than a new car. If they screw it up she can bitch at them.

They wanted 200 dollars labor so I did it myself. Only took half an hour and wife is happy.

Thanks for the advice,
