Cai

Hi guys,
I was wondering, which CAI would fit, from the camrys, into a 96 avalon? If not, what are some good suggestions on making a custom one? My brother said to just use a dryer hose to run from the front/bottom grill to the bay, for extra cold air suction. Any suggestions would be thankful!!

Dryer hose? Bad idea. I don't think it'll take the constant heat for very long, better and more long term option would be some custom-bent exhaust pipe. It's not terribly expensive, and for an additional measure of protection you might want to cover the end of the pipe with screen or wire mesh to keep shit from getting in. Shoot for stainless steel, mandrel-bent tubing if at all possible.

I'd think the Camry setups would at least be compatible, being that the Camry and Avalon share platforms and engines but I might be wrong. Look up CAI's for gen3 Camrys and see what you come up with.

PVC pipe?

Thanks for the advice. I've been looking at some gen 3 camry's intake kit on ebay, but very scarse or expensive. Since my first posting, i've been searching online to see about custom intakes. I notice that most ppl use PVC piping. Will the use of pvc be strong enough to resist the heat generated in the engine bay? Would the use of a cold box elimnate that? The cold box is just an aluminum type container right? No special layer or padding involved?

WHAT?!? NO, try a K&N Funnel Ram filter w/ the built in velocity stack. Putting a piece of wire mesh will still let dust in, and we all know DUST DOSENT COMBUST!

No! OMG! Where have you guys been getting your advice from? NO ONE USES PVC PIPING, and if they do; they are dumbasses! No, PVC Piping will even give off toxic fumes when exposed to that much heat! How would a 'cold box' make the rest of the engine bay cooler? It wouldn't, go to the: hardcore/racing section...

My bad on the wire screen. I recalled that idea from this old DIY system-

Back in the day when modifying 5.0 Mustangs was still new, guys who bootleged their cold air kits would get a K&N Filtercharger panel (fit in the stock box) and run pipe from the box (making a hole for the pipe of course) to just under the bumper and cover THAT with screen to keep the big shit out (leaves and such). So of course there was a filter there to trap dust upstream of that pipe. That's what I was recalling with the screen idea, Brandon is right YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY HAVE A FILTER !!!

I think I'll demote myself to noob status now that I fucked up royally, sorry for the misinformation folks

Steve

Yeah

yeah, i thought about the pcv piping. I typed in custom intake and alot of people use pcv. They all sprayed heat temp paint on it aftereards, but still I'm going to follow the directions on that link you gave. I was wondering though on your custom cai, did the guys at the place cut out the hole where the resonator was? Cause I just did a crappy diy cai today, and the hole where the resonator was was tiny!!!! What I did was use some left over alum tube that my brother had, its about 2ft long and bent 80degress? at the end. Attached to it was a $4 sewer hose and this ran through the hole in the fender to a k&N style filter. Overall, sound is good and i can definitly feel a difference. I'll psot some pictures up. One question though, the 180 mandrel u bent tube, if I were to buy that, I would need to cut that myself right? Thanks for the advice!g
