The manufacturer's recommendations for older vehicles often specify more frequent oil change intervals. For my 92 Camry, it's 3750 miles for "severe" duty and 7500 miles for "normal" duty. I've been doing it at 3000 for most of it's life, mostly because of my old habits, which I recently changed.
As for using the half synthetic oil, sure you can. As long as it meets Toyotas recommendations for viscosity and API rating, it should be fine.
