4th Generation OBDII Codes. EVAP Problem?

(2000 Camry, 4cyl Auto, ~286,000 miles)

Today I went to AutoZone to have a look at my check engine codes.

The following codes came up in this order: P0401, P0440, P0441, P0446, P0770.

Then, the last three P04* codes were repeated: P0440, P0441, P0446

At least three of them have to do with the EVAP system, and they've been coming up for about the last one to two years.

I believe the P0401 one is new, it has something to do with the EGR valve. The P0770 is also new, and the guy at AutoZone seemed a bit puzzled about it.

More than likely, all of these codes have to do with one or two issues. Where should I begin?

I'm surprised not to see responses after twenty-four hours.

Should I re-post this in the Gen 3/4 forum? I figured such a problem may not be generation specific, but I guess I could be wrong.

P0770 is trans shift solenoid E malfunction (also called shift solenoid SL). This would control the torque converter lock up.

Could be a bad solenoid, wiring to it, or something internal to the trans. The solenoid valve may just need cleaning. Has the fluid ever been changed?

P0401 is insufficient EGR flow.

Could be a stuck closed EGR valve, plugged exhaust tube to the EGR, valve or bad VSV valve that controls the EGR valve.

P0440 is a general EVAP failure code

P0441 and 0446 are EVAP purge and vent control malfunctions.

Typically it is a vacuum leak in the EVAP system hose, bad cannister or bad VSV valve on the cannister.

If you want to tackle the codes get a manual such as Haynes that can explain all the systems.

Best to post in correct generation section for better results.

Do a TN history search, all of the codes have come up and various causes discussed for Camry You will learn a lot about each code.

Strange all the codes would appear at once, or did they. Might check the wiring or may even be a computer issue but not likely.

P0401 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
P0440 - Evaporative Emission System
P0441 - Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0446 - Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit
P0770 - Shift Solenoid "E"

Like toyomoho said there might be some hose broken or loose connector.

Download your repair manual from www.camrystuff.com. I believe they have troubleshooting section there as well.

Good luck,

Sam
