I am new here and I am a new Camry owner. I have a 93 Camry with a 4cyl and was woundering if the timing belt broke, does it damage the engine. It has 148K and was never replaced.
Hey, welcome to the forum. If your timing belt snaps it snaps and you are stranded. I don't think there is any danger to your engine. Where are you from? If you mean 148K miles then that's a LOT to still be using your original timing belt. I suggest you get it changed as soon as you can. When a timing belt snaps there is no warning beforehand so you will never know.

The 5s-fe is a non-inference fit engine, if the belt goes the engine quits. I highly recommend that you have it changed, you might be due for a water pump anyways and that would be the time to do both. Its your call.

that is good to know, I will get the car in asap to get the belt done. How much should it be?
Like I said earlier... where are you from? If you are in Toronto go to Basil at T-Lex. You could save a lot.

Just a note. Eventhough your car is due for a timing belt and like someone else said a water pump too, your driving habits probably have really helped that belt last as long as it did. Change it quickly. I bet when they do they will find major cracks in the belt.
As of right now, it's a ticking time bomb. It's a bad deal to get stuck once it goes and you could get ripped if you get stuck in a bad area. The mechanics will know without them you are going no where!
Yea I have appointment for Monday to get the belt fixed. One question, there is a rattle noise near the water pump. Is this what happens when they are going bad?
Right before I got my timing belt change I noticed the engine seemed to shake a bit more than usual. After I had it changed the engine ran like normal again. I hope this answers ur question.

Any one know what the noise might be???
Are you sure it is near the pump? It could also be a cracked engine mount... what did the dealer say?

I am up to 75,000 miles on my timing belt but I am too lazy to bring it in...I know once I am there I am gonna need a new water pump too....It is cheaper for the first time ever to go to a Toyota dealer for a timing belt because they do it so often and there are always specials....you can try and do it yourself but it is a pain because it is hard to get to...I am gonna drive mine until it snaps...
