Wont rev past 2000

Hey guys,
Im new here so forgive me if I sound stupid :P

Basically i got given a 1994 camry as a birthday present, it had just about everything wrong with it.... blown head gasket, crank seal busted, oil pump seal and gasket busted, bad tyres, engine mounts needed replacing... anyway, so I got all those fixed hooray for spending money :P

But now i got another problem im hoping isn't the transmission... Basically the car drives fine, after it's cooled down after being driven.... however if i drive it, turn the engine off, and get back in shortly after, the car will have trouble accelerating in Drive gear, it will jump whenever it's finally reached about 60km/h and it wont rev past 2000.... However if i leave the car for like 30mins-1hour, it'll drive fine... any ideas?

The fact that it won't rev past 2000 does not sound like a transmission problem. That sounds like an engine related problem. A wild guess would be a defective coil inside the distributor. They have a tendancy to cause problems when they get hot. Remember, that's just a wild guess. It would be more helpfull to have more information about this car. Is the check engine light on? If so, have you tried to retrieve the codes? Which engine does the car have and how many miles are on the car?

Thanks for replying Mike ,

The check engine light isn't on, and the car has about 263000km's so like 160000miles roughly?

It seems to have stopped now though I haven't drove it a lot, just work and back. But not enough to get the engine hot. You made me a happy man saying it's not the transmission (hopefully) cos Autos are heaps to replace

Thanks for helping

Just another thought. Notice the next time you have this problem if it is damp/wet out. That can be another indication of a defective coil. They have a tendancy to develop hairline cracks and can short themselves out to any metal inside the distributor when the air is damp.

you know what mike, you're a god lol

the only times it's happened are after driving it in the rain, then turning it off and on again, and once after I washed it... I think you may have diagnosed my car

Any idea how much this will cost to fix?

The coil itself is about $40-$50 for an aftermarket one. I would guess a mechanic would charge about 1 hour of labor to put one in. It's not a hard thing to do, so you might consider doing it yourself. It's best to take the distributor out of the car to do this, if you feel comfortable doing that. You can scribe a line on the distributor base and the engine block to mark the timing position. Then keep everything inside the distributor aligned and you can do the work and reinstall the distributor without having to retime anything. That way you can do this without needing a timing light. There are Toyota factory service manuals stickied at the top of the Toyota Camry forum over at AutomotiveForums.com, that are available for free downloading. I suggest you go over there and download the one for the Generation 3 Camry. It should help you with this problem and many others. There are tests for checking the coil. You will need a digital volt/ohmeter to run the tests. Even if you don't feel comfortable doing this repair yourself, I would still go and download the manual just for future reference.
