Canada Is It Wise To Spray The Underbody Once Roads Have Been Salted?

I have heard that you should never have your car's underbody rust-proofed (i.e. oil sprayed) by outfits like Rust Check, Krown, etc. after the roads have been salted by the city.

The reason I am told is that if salt has been put down on the roads, this road salt will be all over the underbody of your car at the time you take your car to a rustproofing dealer and any oil that is sprayed onto the underbody will just seal in all the salt and cause more damage than good in the long run.

Any truth to this?

Not sure, but I've had trucks rustproofed and they pressure wash the underside and everything before they spray the rustproofing, at least in our case. Now, whether they got all the salt, and whether or not some of the rustproofing spray went over salt, I won't know.

Best bet is to have them spray the underside (wash it) as best they can, let dry, then undercoat it. Maybe that will be better than nothing.

Just my two cents

I agree with you that best bet is to wash the underside, let dry, then undercoat it. Somehow, I cannot see a dealer willing to do that - it would take at least 1-2 hours before the underside is reasonably dry.

Until I hear some convincing argument, I think I will hold off until the summer before I have my car's underside sprayed.
