Camry 09 oil fiter

Hi,

Newbie to the forum. I have a question about where I may find the oil filter for 09 camry. It is hidden so well and no mention whatsoever from the manual. Any ideas?

Thanks,
J

Did you ever consider searching or at least posting what car you have? I am not a psychic.

Yes, I have. Can't find anything for 09 model. Did find one for 08 model, it is said the filter was very close to the drainage plug. I looked but still couldn't find it. Another person said he just brought to service and ask the tech guy.

As to the car model, I thought I mentioned 09 camry. Haven't figured out how to add to the profile yet.

So exactly which 09 do you have? There are two engine options and the 09 shares the engine with 07 and 08.

V6 or 4 cylinder?

The v6 is a cartridge filter.
The 4 should be an F1 spin on filter.

They both are behind the oil pan.

Oh man. Most important info. It is a 4-cylinder one.

Behind the oil pan? So I have to lifte the car and access it from below? I did look from under but can't see from there. I used to have the same model for 2k and the filter is right in the front.

Depend on how you looks at it.

If your looking at the plug on the pan go forward towards the front bumper, once the oil pan ends go up (towards the passenger side) .

It should be hiding up there. There might be a little plastic shield over it. Its in the same place as all of the newer gen camrys.

The 2000 Camry does not have the same engine. You may be able to use the same filter, but they're in different locations. The filter on the 4 cylinder is near the passenger side wheel. It's hard to see the filter except from directly underneath it.

Best way to get it out is to use a cap type wrench with a 6" extension and a ratchet. The factory filter is a complete pain in the ass to remove. Tear the new filter box into 1" x 3" strips and stick 1 or 2 pieces in the cap so they radiate outwards from the center and ensure it covers the side of the cap also. This will make the fit tighter and allow you to turn the filter with more force without the cap coming off. You'll see what I mean when you go to try to remove the filter.

Its hard to describe where it is. It would be easier to show you. Once you find it you'll be like how did I miss that.

When we get the new cars in for there first oil changes the oem/jdm filters are the hardest to get off.

BTW: I work at one of the major toyota dealers in my area.

It is forward of the oil pan (toward the front of the car), up in a well by the passenger side. This way it is protected from being hit by debris from the road. It can be a PITA to break loose, as the others have mentioned, but a good cap style wrench and a 6 inch 3/8" extension make it doable. I find driving the front of the car up on something like Rhino Ramps gives you enough room to slide under the front of the car and remove both the oil pan drain bolt and the filter. I have some homemade ramps that lift the car about 3 inches. Having the filter where it is on the generation 6 (2007-2009) 4 cylinder engines produces much less mess than the older generation 5SFE, 3SFE and 2SE 4 cylinder engines. They had the oil filter located in the front of the engine block at a 45 degree angle downward. As soon as you broke the filter loose, oil ran down everywhere on the front of the block and the front of the oil pan. The generation 6 location is a bit better IMHO.

Thanks guys for the response, espeically for the patience with the newbie! I have better ideas where to find it now.

Talk about finding the right tool to remove filter and it took me many trips to WalMart, Autozone, and a local store to find one that works.

Cheers,
-J

How are you having trouble finding the tool?

Go to where the oil filters are, find the one that fits your car and then find a cap that fits that filter. Then put the filter back on the shelf if you don't need it. Filters generally don't come in sealed boxes so no one will know the difference and probably no one will care.
