Unhappy intercoolers

here's a question: whats the difference between the air-to-air intercoolers and the air-to-liquid intercoolers?

Air to air intercoolers use air passing over the intercooler to cool the charged air inside. Liquid (usually coolant) to air intercoolers are almost the same except that liquid is used to cool the charged air inside the intercooler. A liquid to air intercooler is basically just a air to air intercooler with a welded box around it that holds and circulates liquid. The liquid is cooled by a small cooling system of its own. This is usually a small radiator and a small pump to circulate the water. Heres an example of an air/water intercooler on an MR2 http://homepages.tig.com.au/~robs/intercooler2.htm.
