Main Engine Seal-Is it common for it to go?

I have a 2000 toyota camry with about 60k miles on it. I was driving home one day and the low oil light came on. I checked the oil and it was low, very low like 4 quarts low. I put 4 quarts of oil in. Took it to the dealership. They said the rear main engine seal was leaking. Is this common for jap cars? My brother has a 97 civic and the same thing happed to him at 70k miles. Luckily for the both of us we where still under warrranty.

Your problem may be that you are overfilling it....you say it was low...so you put 4 quarts in it. Most dipsticks only display the top quart of oil in the oil pan. You need to add at very most a quart at a time and check the dipstick to see where it is. When a car is overfilled the most common thing to happen is for one or both main seals to leak.

Yeah, sounds to me like you overfilled it. The dipstick shows about the top quart of your oil level.

No I did not overfill my camry. It was leaking before I put the oil in. I checked the dipstick after I put in each quart. And I always drain the oil and put 5 quarts in at oil change time, which is the correct amount. The question is do jap cars have problems with there main oil seals going? My mom has a 98 civic with 60k miles on it and I bet you anything that before 100k the engine oil seal is gonna go!
