cylinders fire only once, but car does not start

About Toyota Camry 1998 4 cyl.
I had to replace no. 1 connecting rod and piston on my Camry.
To do this, I followed instructions from Chilton maual.
From top of engine, I removed the valve covers, intake manifold, exhust manifold, cylinder head, etc, etc. And from bottom, oil pan, balancer, etc. etc. and replaced the conrod and piston.

I did all put it back together as per instructions, lined up the timing belt correctly, but now when I crank the engine, it does not start.
It appears that when I try cranking after a long while (like first attempt on a new day) upon cranking, all 4 cylinders fire once (but only once) but the car does not start.

If I continue cranking, occassionally the cylinders fire, no start.

Has anybody seen anything similar? Any advice and clues will be appreciated.

I would bet that your 180 degrees out. your timing is set on the exhaust stroke, not the compression stroke...been there, done that

car makes lot of smoke

I've finally managed to get the car running. (I had to change piston 1) on this camry.
But the car makes lot of smoke - whitish smoke (burning oil).
When I examined the plug on all cylinders, the cylinder 1 plug has oil on it.
The oil seems to be leaking in that cylinder and burning there.
Anybody knows how to fix this?

White smoke is Coolant, not oil. Is there oil in your coolant or coolant in your oil?

No coolant in oil or oil in coolant, but oil has turned very dark in just about few hours of idling.
The smoke has bluish tint, so I thought it's oil.

I suspect the piston rings are not exact match (I used the original rings, changed only the piston).
Do the original piston's rings work with a Sealed Power piston?
