My mother-on-law just gave us her 99 Camry with 260K on the clock. I poped open the hood because the battery went dead and I found this. Considering this isn't a Factory/Dealer option, what broke?
Now, I asked my mother-in-law what this pencil was doing there and she didn't have a clue.... so now I don't have much faith in her mechanic
Errr... A real shady fix to plug up the Cold Start Injector or something??? I dunno... Beats me. It looks like this "mechanic" would be the same type of idiot who fixes a blown fuse in a house by puting a penny behind it.

wait....the car has 260 miles or kilos......second....it looks like the pencil is shoved somewhere near the throttle body......i think....which is basically where the air comes into the engine.....so maybe its rescricting the air from exiting the throttle body......honestly, i dont know why they hell its there.....u should probably take it to a mechanic just to look at it......my guess is that its for the throttle body...??????

Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. It's a one-way valve for venting gasses/equalizing pressure. I seem to recall there being a legitimate reason why one would plug that up, but I can't recall what that would be exactly.
Check the attached pic. Sorry for the angle, but it's the only one I have... And it's a little difficult to get a shot of mine right now since my car is covered with 48403038929304 feet of snow at the moment
(edit: btw, this is what it's supposed to look like)

I figured it to be something easy and stupid. Well that at least looks easy enough to fix, talk about a vacuum leak if I pulled that pencil out. Sure is a different design compared to a SBC. That mechanic scares me and my mother-in-law trusted him with everyting on that car
It has 260,000 miles on the clock.
I had a little talk with the mother-in-law.... she was suppose to get the brakes done 4,000 miles ago. She decided since she didn't feel any difference in the brake pedal, that it was fine and the place she took was tring to pull the wool over her eyes Well at least we have a new car to drive, I'll be still driving the 56 though and switching off with the Caddy if it snows.
