I have a 97 XLE V6 automatic camry and I was wondering if it's possible to do a auto to manual swap on the tranny? And if it's possible which tranny would I use?
yes yes yes yes yes... DO IT!!! you would need shifter, cables, clutch pedal and brake pedal, master cyl, slave cyl (maybe with tranny), flywheel, clutch, TRANNY, and tranny mount... and MT ecu if you want to do it right... there is some custom wiring to do, but it shouldnt be too hard...
im swapping my 94 4cyl auto, for 94 6 cyl manual... which they didnt make, so i gotta do a custom job like rattttttko!
wouldn't all that stuff come with the tranny he gets? I was under the impression that if the engine came with that option, it would be plug and play if you converted it minus the ecu.
I agree with Zoni, DO IT. You would need all the parts he listed.
You will need to cut a hole fot the clutch master cylinder, and that should be pre cut. All the parts for the V6 manual camry should be the American version. The Japanese version sold in America, according to the dealer, did not come with this option.
I agree with Deep. Since the car already came with a V6, the wiring should be plug in if you get the 5spd ecu. That is the only difference I see.
The only BIG problem will be getting the auto shifting cable out and putting the manual shifting cables in. The plate they use to house these is held in by two screws, and they are extremely hard to get out unless you have rather small hands. The design for this was to never change after it comes from the factory. Also, this was with the engine out. If you have the engine in the car, you will probably spend a bit of time changing the cables.
I hope you do it. It is a real sleeper. I have surprised many people. One time, the guy's jaw dropped and starred at me as I drove away from him.
but guys, wouldnt you have to change the whole engine wiring harness if you got the 5speed ecu?????? you know, cause they are different... a few extra wires on the AT version...?

^^ Correct.
The actual wiring harnesses are different from M/T and A/T and the ECU swap is not plug-and-play. Either you get an entire M/T engine harness as well, or pull out a Toyota Service Manual and solder wire-by-wire
