Question accelerator sticking

I have a 1990 Camry. Here in the last couple of months, the accelerator has begun to stick. It most often occurs when taking off. Sometimes I have to press the accelerator so hard to make it depress that it overrevs the engine. Like I said, it began happening when taking off out of first gear. But, now it has started to stick when changing gears. Also, every once in a while, it will stick while driving (not changing gears) if I take my foot off the accelerator and put it back on. Can anyone tell me some simple things to try before having to take it to a mechanic. I think it's best to try the simplest solutions before trying more complex things or taking it to the shop. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Check that the throttle cable hasn't bent somehow or isn't too tight, though typically it goes slack rather than tighter.

Or it could be a nest of wolverines in the airbox.
