ABS Code 41

Hello all,

A few days ago the ABS & CEL lights came on my girlfriend's 2006 Camry. We took it to the dealership and were told the ABS module was fried and it would take $2000 to replace it. Naturally, it's also 3 years and two months since she bought it, so the warranty would no longer cover it (or so we were told).

The OBD-II code it gives is P0500 "Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction." Doing the ABS diagnostic gives a 41 code, which from what I've found on the web means "Battery voltage is less than 9.5 volts or more than 16.2 volts. Check battery and voltage regulator."

I'm going to swap the battery from my car and see if that makes a difference, but before I do that I've not yet been able to clear the ABS code. Do the instructions I've found on the web for mid 90s Toyotas, "Press the brake pedal 8 times in 3 seconds or less" still apply to the 2006 model? Do I need to even worry about clearing it or will it take care of itself once whatever the root cause is addressed.

Also, why would the ABS have a problem with the battery but the car show no other symptoms? Or was the dealership correct that the whole module is bad, and this code is just a red herring?

Thanks in advance for any advice or wisdom from those familiar with code 41!

Does the speedometer work OK?

The code 41 means ABS unit is voltage to the skid control ECU is 16.8V or more or 9.6V or less. This would be strange as anything under 12V is a dead car battery and over 16.8V is a bad voltage regulator.

Use a voltmeter to measure battery voltage engine running above 1500 RPM and determine if it is over 16.9V.

Check ECU IG No 2 fuse that supplies power to the ECU.

The dealer should have done all of the above and may be correct in their diagnosis. If so would shop for a used ECU from a salvaged car. Get the part number and shop around.

Opps, forgot to mention that the speedometer doesn't work! Everything else about the car seems fine however. Already drove it around 150 miles with no problems.

Thanks for your input! I'll check it when the sun comes up and it warms up a bit - my cars always wait till it's either below freezing or above 90 to act up!

Vehicle speed sensor also goes to speedo, hence the P0500 code. Troubleshoot the sensor issue to fix the speedo problem then determine what happens with the ABS code.

CEL being on is rated to the P0500 code.
