valve adjustments

this has probably been asked before...... but on the 2.0L SOHC in my '90 Camry..... do the valves use the "pucks" for adjustment or just have lock nuts?..... any help would be thanked.

Its DOHC.

The only motor thats SOHC is the 2S-E which came in gen 1 Camry's.

Valve adjustment is done with shims which fit on top of lifter buckets.

Given the age of your car, I have a feeling you are past the 60,000 service interval for the valve adjustments. You need to ask yourself whether the adjustment is worth the cost and hastle.

I have 150,000 and do not believe the valves have ever been adjusted on my 91 V6. At this point......I'm not very worries about the valves.

You will need to purchase the correct shimes (how the you spell it is a mystery) to perform the adjustment. I am told they are not cheap.

A mechanic I talked to said the valves adjust during the first 30,000 or so miles. After that they are stationary. When I mentioned adjusting them he told me it wasn't worth the hastle.

Given the age of our cars, I have other things I can spend my money on.

Not to hard from the looks of it.

You need special tools to compress the lifter bucket and take out the shims.

Anyways its all documented in a repair manual.
