Advancing Timing

I'm going to be going to my mechanic in a little while to get my drive belt and a couple seals replaced. I've been thinking about asking him to advance the timing a bit while he's in there but I'm not sure if it is really worth doing.

Can anyone help me out and inform me if advancing the timing is recommended? I'd like to know what risks/benefits are involved.

Thanks in advance for the help.

depends on how much you want to advance the timing...

one or 2 degrees, or a lot?

The knock sensors will retard the timing. Depending on how your car is tuned from the factory, the timing should advance or retard depending on fuel used.

For the most part, you shouldn't see any difference if you advance the timing. With computer control timing is for the most part out of your hands.

I wouldn't advance it more than 4 degrees on a stock motor.

I read on another forum a guy with the 1MZ got his timing advanced but I think it was more near 8 degrees, so I would probably go with 7 degrees or somewhere around there, however, judgin by 5SFTE's post I may not even bother at all.

4 degrees isn't really worth it is it?
