I have a 2000 Camry LE-V6. Auto trans. 36,000 miles.
Has anyone experienced any noise when turning the steering wheel. I seem to have a high pitched noise that occurs at lows speeds (like backing out of a driveway). The noise seems to be present usually when I turn my steering wheel after a cold start (the first time I use the car for the day like when I leave for work). I checked the power steering fluid it is at the proper level. Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts on what the problem is or how to fix it?
squeal from the belt on the PS pump maybe? try some belt dressing on it, but that's only a temporary measure...if it works then u'll prolly need to have it replaced soon...36K is pretty early to need to replace that tho but still give it a try
I also have a strange nosie coming from the wheel. It keeps squeaking. It sounds like 2 things are rubbing together. I tried lubricating whatever I could that was under the cover, but the sound is still there.

I just had the brakes checked and the dealr siad they were at 60%, so, I doubt if it is the brakes. After reading through many threads this noise seems to be common. It started to occur before the really cold weather came, but it does seem to help if I warm up the car. I'm wonder if I have some blockage or a slow leak in the hose that connects to the power steering pump. Possibly, not enough fluid is reaching the pump when I first start the car for the day. I will check the hoses and belts this weekend if the weather isn't too bad.
Is the noise you're hearing a squealing sound, like when you have a loose belt? The sound mine was making was kind of a lower groaning sound. It only occured at low speeds in parking lots, and never seemed to be an issue once driving. My g/f @ the time said it sounded like a mouse :-) The noise from the rubber grommet is a very common Camry issue, and it sounds like it's coming right from the steering wheel, although the noise is really coming from the firewall...
I checked my fluid and it was at a proper level. I did top it off. I lubricated the steering column both indise the car and behind the firewall with a silicon spray. I still notice I get noise. I check the hoses (as best I could see without gettingunder the car) and I don't see any signs of leakage. The weather has warmed up to in the 40's here and I still here, so, I doubt if it is the cold weather. Someone has mentioned the belt, but if the belt was loose wouldn't it squeal all of the time or at least everytime I tunred the sterring wheel?
I get the same thing. I just blame it on the cold because it just does that when i back out of my driveway in the mornings, with no problems after that. Its only when i turn the wheel all the way too. I also blame squeaking noise coming from my back suspension on the cold too. When the car was in Hawaii, it didnt do that. But now that I'm in oregon, it does. BTW, how do you fix that squeak from the rear suspension? silicon grease?
Just out of curiosity... have the people who experienced this problem changed their wheel/tires setup to something larger than the stock configuration?
i think your belt is too tight. when it gets hot (after warmed up) the belt will expand a little bit and the squealing will go away. try to loosen it up for just a little bit and see if that will fix it.
