yes it is. I am doing one right now on my 90 4cyl and I am dead broke.

Well actually, it is not that expensive if you use all used parts and do it yourself. With used parts and no labor, you could do it for under 1000 easy. like 700 dollars. I am paying for labor though and using lots of new aftermarket parts so more like 2200 for me.
