I am getting a 3rd gen 3sge in my sv21 camry, making 129kw and 186nm, so i need a stronger manual gearbox, also because its feeling loose and the car has done 362,000 ks or 224,000 miles. Are there any stronger manual gearboxes that can go into a camry? or can i get the gearbox rebuilt with stronger parts?.
Well, you could just have the stock box rebuilt, or you could use the 3sge box which as a side benefit has shorter, closer gear ratios. Other than that I'm not too sure about stronger transmissions.
However, I see no reason why the 3sfe gearbox cannot handle a regular 3sge, if it was turbo now that's another story but it's not so I don't see why it wouldnt work

If you use a tranny from a MR2 you need to do some modifications to it.
The tranny in the 3sfe 2nd gen camry and a 4th gen 3sge celica are the same except for two things. They are different final drive gear and the 3sge have beefier gears so they can handle more power. The gears on the 3sge are not shorter and are not quicker. The only thing that makes the tranny accelerate the car faster is because the final drive gear is taller then the 3sfe. The 5 forward gears are the same gear ratio. I would still reccomend putting the 3sge tranny in though because it is a direct bolt in and it can handle more power then the 3sfe tranny.
I dont know it it really worth it getting a 3sge gearbox, can the 3sfe handle the 129kw, my car cars gearbox isnt direct and i think the syncros are screwed( it grinds coming into 3rd gear), Is there a way you can know if your gearbox is screwed? becuase i think its just the syncros. I have driven a camry with a similar mileage to mine, and the gearing felt very loose.
^ ur gearbox should be a ble to handle the power, but as everybody else says, you should probably get a new gearbox anyway, and do everything at once.....it sounds like your current tranny is about to go.....300,000k is quite a bit, since you seem toe beat on your car quite regularly, and this way, if you do have some big plans for the 3sge.......
