Exclamation Noise and trembling when turning steer wheel

I have a 97 Camery LE and it is running smooth. But these days, I found that when turning steer wheel I feel noise and trembling. This only occurs when the car is in very slow speed (usually just after starting or releasing brake) or when hitting brake. There is no such problem when running in normal speed. What's the possible problem? Is it about transmission fluid? Thanks

Check the fluid level in the power steering fluid resevoir. You might be low due to a leak in the power steering pump, one of the power steering hoses or the steering rack. If low, refill the reservoir and see how long it takes for the level to go down again. You can also check the car for leaks in these various components, if the level goes down again rather quickly.

Thumbs up

Thank you so much, Mike. I checked the level of power steering fluid and found that it is much lower than the minimal level. I didn't doubt the problem of low fluid level because I changed oil two and half months ago. Maybe it is the evidence that there is leakage in my car. I will add some power steering fluid and observe the change. Can you tell me how often the fluid should be added normally? Thanks a lot!

Normally, fluid should never have to be added. Fluid is not consumed by the power steering system. Low fluid level indicates some sort of leak. It can be leaking from any of the areas I mentioned above. That's why I suggested refilling the system and seeing how long it takes to go down again. It may be slow enough where you can just top it off occasionally. If it is leaking too quickly you will have to locate and fix the leak.

One other note. Refill the reservoir right away. Running the pump while low on fluid will shorten it's life. I believe Dexron III is recomended for your vehicle as the proper power steering fluid, but check your owner's manual to be certain.

Mike, thank you again for letting me know a lot. I've just refilled the reservoir. After driving a less than 3 miles, I found the level lower. So I am pretty sure there is leakage. I will find a mechanic to check fix it. Do you about how much it costs for fixing this leakage? Thanks.

That really depends on where the leak is. A leak in one of the power steering hoses could be $150 - $200. If the pump itself is leaking, double that. If the steering rack is leaking you are looking at some big dollars. We'll hope for a leaking hose, for your sake. These are really just guesses.

Good luck.
