Cruise control problem

The cruise control in my Camry (95 Automatic LE 2.2 L) starts flashing when I activate it in the HWY and it just dies. Some times it works fine. Is there anybody out there with a similar problem or an idea about wahat could be the cause for this erratic problem.
Thanks

I have that problem sometimes when the car is on cruise control and tries to climb a steep hill, or when I try accelerating the car with the cruise control button.

It used to do it ALL of the time when I had a faulty speed sensor, tripping the ABS light. Now that's repaired and I only have the cruise control problem once in a while.

Hello,

Cruise control system consists of Cruise Control Electronic Control Unit (CC ECU), actuator, cruise control cable, speed sensor, cruise control switch, stoplight switch, park/neutral switch and related wiring.
When cruise control functions are canceled, CRUISE indicator light will blink 5 times, indicating 2-digit trouble code(s) are stored in CC ECU memory.
READING TROUBLE CODES.
Trouble codes are displayed as flashes of CRUISE indicator light. All trouble codes are 2-digit numbers. CC ECU outputs trouble codes from lowest to highest.
RETRIEVING TROUBLE CODES.
1) Codes from CC ECU self-diagnostic system are retrieved through Data Link Connector 2 (DLC2). Test drive vehicle to allow fault codes to set in CC ECU memory. If CRUISE indicator light flashes 5 times while driving or cruise control will not set or operate, check for trouble codes.
2) Stop vehicle and leave ignition switch in ON position.
Connect jumper wire between DLC2 terminal E1 and terminal Tc.
3) If any code is present, perform test(s) in order given.
See CC ECU TROUBLE CODE DEFINITION table. If no codes are present and CRUISE indicator light begins flashing on and off every .25 second, perform NORMAL code tests in order given.
DEFINITION table for correct test order and go to TESTING & DIAGNOSIS for appropriate tests. If no codes are present and CRUISE indicator light does not flash on and off every .25 second, and cruise control system malfunction still exists, perform CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION TEST
under TROUBLE SHOOTING.

CC ECU TROUBLE CODE DEFINITION TABLE
11 Overcurrent (Short) In Motor Circuit
12 Overcurrent (Short) In Magnet Clutch Circuit or Open In Magnet Clutch Circuit For 0.8 Second
13 Actuator Position Sensor Detects Abnormal Voltage
14 Open In Actuator Motor Circuit
21 Speed Sensor Signal Not Sent To CC ECU For 140 Milliseconds Or Longer
23 Vehicle Speed Sensor Pulse Abnormal (4)
32 Short In CRUISE ON-OFF (MAIN) Switch
34 Control Does Not Turn Off Before Switching
41 MOTOR ACTUATE MALFUNCTION
42 SOURCE VOLTAGE DROP / Source Voltage Drop
43 / Faulty Cruise Control ECU
(4) If speed set can be maintained when CRUISE ON-OFF (MAIN) switch is again set to SET/COAST position, there is no malfunction.
Let us know how it goes
HTH,

This cruise control problem is very erratic. When I set the speed , then the cruise light flashed 5 time then the cruise control was cancelled.

To make the story short, a minor adjustment of the brake light switch located in the upper part of the brake pedal took care of the problem.
