Gas Tank cover

Hey.. i drive a 97 carmy and just today my gas tank flip lid woudlnt pop open when i pulled the lever. I kept on pulling and pulling.. and nothing would happen... so i banged on the cover a lid then pulled again.. and what do u know.. IT OPENED.. but when i tried closing it it after... it woulnd't stay closed. So now I have to drive around with it open. Anyone know what the problem is and how much it would cost to fix? And is there any way for me to keep it closed for the time being? Any help would be appreciated.

make sure there isn't ice aroudn the mechanism,

also make sure the cable is pushed back in (it might be stuck in the sheathing)
