Timing belt $$$

Ok, Im a student and I have no money to change my timing belt, so my parent gonna paid for it. But like all parents they want a good price, I always go to this one shop that im very cool with and they said they will do it for me for $300 wit part and labor. But my parent found a place that is full of old cars and they will do it for $150 part and labor. Whereas my friends said they did theirs for $400 and above, can you guys tell me what was your price for timing belt and labor? My car is a 95 camry v6. And Im afraid the $150 place will rape my car...

Dude you want to research the shop before you let them touch your car. Ask around, talk to people that have had their car worked on at that shop see what they have to say. Just because a shop charges less then another doesn't always mean that the shop sucks.

I'm wondering, I used to have an Escort, and when the timing belt had to be replaced, they had to pull off the water pump to fix the belt. Is it as difficult on a Camry or is the process less complicated?

the only difficult part is getting your hand in the space between the engine and the passenger side of the engine bay... THAT is hard! but the rest is easy... on the 1mz there are like 9 or so little bolts or nuts on the timing belt cover. You also have to take off the front right wheel, and the wheel well trim, to get to the crank pully, which you also have to get off. so you will need a medium/large size puller. 2 jaw is fine. you also need to wedge a prybar or soemthing into the flexplate in the tranny opening, which is covered by a small plate with 2 screws. its really not that bad to do... if it is your first time working on the car/engine, allow about 6-8 hours total for your work on it. It might take that long if you need to figure out how everything works. Get a haynes manual from the autoparts store, its really not that hard guys!

to answer the original question though... 150 is a great price, and i wouldnt worry about them messing anything up. It would prolly take a mechanic about an hour or 2 total to do it. So if he quotes you like 3 or 4 hours for labor, i'd tell him to screw himself. Thats really what you are paying for, a timing belt is like a 20-30 dollar part.

Yeah, I got my timing belt for $18 at Autozone. The dealership wanted $35.

thread revival!

$300 USD to have timing belt and water pump changed. Does that sound reasonable?
