tanny problems

Hey guys-
the other day on my way to school my car ran fine to the end of the block, no major noises at all, and i stopped at the stop sign, and when i went to go it just made terrible griding sounds, the speedo still moves, just not the car, i made sure i dont have an axle problem, but has this ever happened to anyone where the tranny makes a sound in gear, and the axles spin freely in any gear? any suggestions to what could be wrong, and whats the average price for a transmission and how long approximatly does it take for you do-it-yourselfers that have done it on here?

Its a 1991 Camry DX with a 3sfe automatic transmission, 225,000miles(US)

Thanks guys, just thought i'd ask about that stuff before i decide if i want to try to get rid of the car, still runs perfect too, just wont move

Could be a busted torque converter and/or tranny.

Not sure about the price, but my friend bought a A140E tranny (94 Camry I4 auto) from TAP for $400.

Took us about 6 hrs to swap it out.

So the car completley stopped moving at the end of the block? Did you have to push or tow it afterward? If the speedo is still working wouldnt the problem have to be after the transmission (like the axle(s))?

yes, had to be pushed back, but both axles spin freely when the car is jacked up in the air, in any gear including park, when you pu it in gear with front in the air nothign spins, only speedo goes, and a noise comes from transmission oh well, any suggestions are appreciated, my thought is somethin in the tranny, and i paid 200 for the car and about 100 for bearing stuff and 50 for a new axle, so i think i got my money out, i put 15k miles on it too

Did you happen to notice if they spun in opposite directions?

well both tires don't have to be in the air to spin, and when they are both in the air, you spin one, and nothing at all happens to he other one...

Can you see that both axles are still intact? If so then I think your problem is in the diff.
